How to Get Involved in Your Community This Holiday Season

November 26, 2013

As a senior in college, I’ve had a variety of work and internship experience, but no experience has been as meaningful as volunteering for local organizations. Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community and is fun to meet others who live around you. Here is a simple guide to getting started on giving back:

Do some research
Find out what different organizations are doing, who they help, and why you want to help them.

Reach out
Contact that organization, and find out what kind of help they need most.

Donate your time
Do hands on work. Interact with people. You will build valuable relationships you will build with those you serve and those with whom you are serving.

Donate funds
The truth is, money gets things done. In order provide school supplies to a child in need, monetary transactions occur. Find out where your money goes, and realize that it is a great way to give to organizations you don’t have time to physically help out.

Spread the word, start a movement
Get friends and family involved. Oftentimes, friends will be eager to get involved in the community as well. Volunteering is also a great way to spend time with your family. Follow organizations on social media or sign up for email lists; sometimes organizations need volunteers last minute!

Volunteering is incredibly easy. Reach out to a local organization you identify with, find out how you can help, and get others involved! And don’t forget, these organizations usually run year-round and need volunteers at ALL times of year.
